If a law firm partner expects an associate attorney to be available with little notice, it's important for the associate to have an open and honest conversation with the partner to set clear boundaries and expectations. The associate can say something like:
"I understand that as a lawyer, my work can be demanding and often requires a significant time commitment. However, I believe it's important for my well-being and the quality of my work to maintain a healthy balance between my professional and personal life. While I am always willing to go above and beyond to meet the needs of my clients and the firm, I would like to discuss setting some clear boundaries regarding my availability. Can we set a schedule that allows me to provide the best possible service to the firm and its clients, while also taking care of my own needs?"
By having this conversation, the associate can communicate their priorities and values, and work with the partner to establish a mutually beneficial arrangement. The key is to approach the conversation with a spirit of collaboration and a focus on finding a solution that works for everyone.
